Artistic Statement
As an artist I find myself drawn towards work that remains open-ended, art that doesn’t bring the viewer to a particular conclusion. I believe answers can be traps, and often limit understanding. Art has the ability to speak from a place free of preconceptions; to enlighten, with an awareness of relativity. Not the theory of relativity, but of the meaning, which states: relativity the state of being dependent for existence on or determined in nature, value, or quality by relation to something else.
Through the process of experimentation and discovery, I liken myself to a scientist. By manipulating different mediums, elements, and contexts, I create relationships that stimulate thinking, as opposed to offering an explanation. This blending of scientist and artist appears in much of my work.
Generally, I begin working with a particular concept in mind. The impetus for a piece is never so consuming as to compete for importance with the work itself. The work is always allowed to evolve, as does my relationship to it. It is evident to the viewer that my work is built with purpose, as well as labored intent. This helps to avoid passive viewing. In addition, I use a variety of mediums, techniques as well as materials, surfaces and textures to engage my audience.
Perception, memory, nostalgia, and spirituality are concepts of special interest to me. Finally, I believe that art itself is inherently meaningless, and it is only the viewer who creates meaning.
