Artistic Statement
What first attracted me to hand-tinted photography were the serene, peaceful qualities of the early 1900s landscape photographs of Wallace Nutting. His peaceful hand-tinted landscape series was my inspiration. As I became more familiar with his hand-tinting techniques, I began using them with my portraiture and also with my arranged dreamscape compositions. I photograph in black and white and color each photograph by hand, using oil paints, watercolors, pastels and dyes. By applying color to the black and white image, I am able to introduce subtle and surreal elements that allow me to refine that image further.

I continue to experiment with staged poses including animal masks and mannequins and have begun to incorporate my hand-tinted photographs in collage and assemblage projects.

The medium of hand-tinting photographs has enabled me to express my vision of the world— somewhere between reality and dreams.
